Quotable Quickie [Women’s History Month Edition]: Down With Oppressive Feminism

“This Women’s History Month, I refuse to celebrate a white feminism that keeps women of color on the margins. This Women’s History Month, I refuse to celebrate a white feminism that alienates, subjugates and oppresses women of color… We have been, are, and will always be ‘exceptional’ and ‘important.'”

– Barbara Sostaita

This is taken from Sostaita’s recent Huffington Post article “This Women’s History Month, I Refuse to Celebrate Your Feminism.” I came across this article in trying to figure out who I wanted to be my first feature for this month’s Quotable Quickies in celebration of all women. This piece resonated with me deeply and I want to thank Sostaita for helping me find the direction I want to go with regard to this series and for helping me step up toward becoming the critical-thinking, intersectional feminist that I strive to be.

Join us every Friday this March for a new Quotable Quickie feature for Women’s History Month. And become part of the celebration: Share quotes and women that you feel inspired by in the comments, as well!

Cheers,
Michelle

  1. Agreed, agreed, agreed. As a white woman, I have to check my privilege all the time. Intersectionality is key and non-white women are constantly underserved by mainstream feminism. It took me a long time to figure this out. Tough, important stuff !
